Project Greyhound Rising

Monessen School District is completing a series of facility renovations and improvements to address aging infrastructure, enhance safety, and modernize the learning environment for students.

These projects are board approved, monitored financially, and focused on students' needs.

Why are these renovations needed?

  • The two buildings in the district are 30 years or older.
  • Some areas have never been renovated.
  • Maintain safe and functional learning spaces
  • Meet current safety and accessibility  requirements
  • Support modern instructional programs
  • Improve efficiency and long-term stability
  • The majority of projects were structural and needed updated

Areas of Improvement

Instructional Spaces

  • Classroom and learning environment updates
  • Technology and media spaces
  • Student support and service areas (Sensory Room @ MEC)

Athletic & Community Facilities

  • Brand new Gymnasium floor (Donated by ABM)
  • Structural work in the gym because of damage to a foundation wall

STEAM & Career Readiness

  • Technology-enhanced learning areas
  • STEAM, e-gaming, and cybersecurity instructional spaces
  • Career and workforce skill development areas (E- games & Cybersecurity are billion dollar industries with high rates of employment)

Life Skills & Student Programs

  • Hands-on learning environments (Coffee Shop for life skill students to manage)
  • Career-connected skill development spaces
  • Support areas for diverse student needs

Funding & Oversight

Renovation projects are funded through:

  • Facilities grant-$966,187
  • Board-approved financing-PNC Bond- $ 11,745,00 million
  • The bond amount was higher than construction costs because it included capitalized interest to assist with early bond payments.

Funds are restricted to approved purposes and cannot be used for salaries.
All projects follow public bidding and approval requirements.

Student Safety

Student safety is prioritized during all construction activities through:

  • Secured work zones
  • Scheduled construction outside instructional hours when possible
  • Ongoing safety monitoring
  • The majority of the work was completed when students weren’t here in the summer time.
